There are changing times. A Labour government has been replaced by a Conservative and Liberal Democrat one. A world that we all thought had unlimited resources is proving to be more limited. And economic boom times have been replace by a bust cycle - and a rather large one at that.
We hear of spending cuts. Of cuts in the numbers of public servants. Of the need to cut Co2 emissions.
I have on my shelves a book that's entitled "thriving on Chaos" - perhaps it should read "thriving on change"? If we take a careful look at where we are, the resources we have available, where things are not as efficient as they should be at the moment and say "where should we be / how do we get there?", then we have an opportunity.
I've just written a long piece (far in excess of the post size) looking at the current situation on transport in general on Wiltshire, from our Melksham base, seeing some of the issues we have today and looking forward to Utopia.
The good news is that there are so many little things that could be done - looking after the pennies or practicallity can save the pounds of wastege and impracticallity that are out there. We've not got to do all that much to make a signifcant step towards Utopia, and in Utopia our government is spending less, we're spending less carbon, and we have a better quality of life. The bad news is that we really need to make sure that a combination of dogma, inertia, vested interests and lack of vision could so easily lead to a missed opportunity or - worse - a system that's shrunk away from what's really needed for the future.
