First ScotRail are allowed to increase fares by a maximum of the retail price index, plus one per cent.

The RPI inflation rate is running at five per cent.

Over the past decade, rail fares have risen by more than 28 per cent.

The increase will apply to all routes except those in Strathclyde, which is expected to see a similar hike in May.

The firm insisted no decision had yet been made.
