Look - and what do you see?
« on: December 04, 2005, 07:22:21 AM »

Look and what do you see?  Darkness and a train approaching an apparently empty platform. This is the picture that the Whitehall mandrins and the current government have seen, and perhaps that's what's lead to the current threat to our services.  But look more closely and in the dark shadows, you'll see there are people there and they WILL be getting on the train - that's what our letters and publicity may tell the mandrins.

To those of you who have written to your MPs, to the DfT, and to other parties - [i]thank you for you help so far[i].  Please keep it up.  I don't know whether we'll get a fair review for the Melksham services / the Swindon to Southampton line, but I can tell you that people ARE being reached and are having to read / look at the case.

On the front page of this site, you'll see the text of a letter that I just got back from Derek Twigg, who's the government's minister for railways. His web site is at http://www.derektwigg.org.uk/.

My MP also tells me that Roger Jones, the Divisional Manager for franchise specifications, will be replying to me in detail to my letter of early October.

And we've also been noticed by the national media - I'm anticipating that Melksham will be ... oh - I had better just say "watch this space" at the moment ... but things they are a'brewing!

P.S. As the train drew to a stop, people appeared from the shelter and from under the canopy for cycles by the gate. People who had lifts to the station jumped out of cars and the first train of the day left for Swindon with at least double figures of people on board.

It's a fairly drab station isn't it, when passing through I was always surprised by the huge amount of activity within 2 minutes of the train arriving.

Anyway, thought I'd mention I took the service from Chippenham to Southampton a few weeks ago (on the way to Winchester) with my missus.  Really pleasant journey and on time too.  The major frustration being that there was no direct service back and we were packed into a Cardiff Central service like sardines - most unpleasant.

I think we'll be going to Salisbury (from Chippenham) next weekend - a journey I probably wouldn't bother with if it wasn't direct (at least one way).

I can also see me wanting to make a few more journeys to Soton in the future, hopefully, I won't be out of luck.

I can't believe more isn't made of the line, especially as the A350 is a 'mare at the best of times.  Salisbury has lots to offer but I guess there's no co-ordination/partnerships going on for tourist attractions.

I went to Switzerland in September - what a contrast!  Trains stop for a bloke by a hay stack and round here we can't manage to hold onto a service which goes through medium sized towns (Chp, Trow and Melk are all around the 30,000 level).  It's very disappointing to think we'd lose a very valuable service merely because of lack of awareness and most people's love of their car!

All the best with the campaign.
