Isnt that fantastic? I'd seen plenty of photos, but never something as detailed as that  Smiley

Some poignant bits too, with the former stationmaster being interviewed and also the following :

3 or 4 services were expected a year after opening, but significant improvement didnt occur until 2001. Interesting that (as with other reopenings of that era) it was seen as a little acorn that would grow and develop, and also interesting that the possibilty of stopping excursion trains was raised.

The experimental nature of the service was mentioned, with BR empowered to close the station at any point if the service failed to attract passengers. However "if the service continued to attact the support it did on Saturday, there seemed little likelihood of this happening, not until another Dr Beeching comes along anyway...." I am reminded of the "What a difference a train made" photos on the Pledge Campaign pages (link below.)

The scenes filmed at Wooton Bassett are ironic as well.

Thanks Sion! That really was an interesting look at Melksham back in the day. Times were clearly much more relaxed back then- Melksham had a bright future it seemed, and look at the people on the track!

Yeah, Graham, if you're planning on a triumphant celebration like that when you get the service restored to a decent level, make sure you bring plenty of HV Vests for the public!

I like that word "when"  Wink

Not only the HV vests, but you can't have a band that's that near to the platform edge, I'm sure.  Nor a train that doesn't have SDO to call ... in fact the latest twist of the knife is the news that a 125 may not be allowed to stop at Melksham even with SDO.  Perhaps  there would be less risk of injury by train if they has a 0 m.p.h. speed limit, and no-one was allowed to get on or off anywhere at all.
