Yes, it's the least used service of the day ... but reports of just one or two passengers per night seem to be out of date as there werre, I'm told, six people on the train last night on the very last Swindon to Westbury.
So does the train justify itself at that level?
It depends how you do your sums. I know what the traffic level was because a visitor to us today travelled from Edinburgh to Melksham by train. The income to the railway industry? Perhaps 50 to 100 pounds (perhaps more as I'm not going to be rude and ask him how much his ticket cost). Cut the service, and I suspect he would have driven ... ALL THE WAY ...
Oh - and he'll be returning North tomorrow, starting off on one of the services that's threatened because of low use.
