Transport 2000 Welcomes Findings of Stern Report

Here are a couple of quotes from Transport 2000 Director Stephen Joseph :

"The Stern review is a wake up call for our Government – but if it is serious about tackling climate change, it has to tackle transport. Gordon Brown’s Pre Budget Report, due at the end of the month, must increase taxation on air travel and gas guzzler cars and put the money raised into improved public transport.”

He continued:

“The Review calls into question the economics of current transport policies – airport expansion and motorway widening should be supplanted by trams, trains, buses and cycle lanes. Next year’s Spending Review is a chance to change the priorities and give people green transport choices."

I hope that the chance reffered to is taken , as this would bring renewed hope for a tram scheme linking Fareham & Gosport (safe Conservative seats , click on http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/249.stm & http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/277.stm) with Portsmouth (where I happen to live)  , which was rejected by Alistair Darling as being too expensive (link below.)

I dont see approval being a problem as Douglas Alexander recently gave programme entry approval to plans to extend the Nottingham (safe Labour seats , click on http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/440.stm , http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/439.stm & http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/438.stm) tram system and announced that the Government will contribute £437m (link below.)
