A Conservative MP has voiced his concern over proposed cuts to train services between Newbury and London (link below.) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/6061678.stmWhat interests me most about this article are the First Great Western quotes : "First Great Western said the company had won a new franchise in April 2006 and therefore needed to change timetables according to what was set out in the franchise bid." "He said the company had held consultations on the changes "months ago" and services are under constant review." "There has been a huge number of changes made, but inevitably we weren't able to make all the amendments put forward and the Newbury late-night trains service was one. The latest service will now leave Reading at 10pm". NOTE : Services are under constant review.

NOTE : Services are under constant review.
Yes, I would agree that they are under review. First does seem to be an information-savvy company and is gatehring data to make its operation more profitable all the time. The idea of the system that's in place is that profit comes from traffic flows and that usually works, but it fails in many cases such as (it seems) the late night Newbury service which is more of an economic service to the area served than a profit maker for the operator. The Service Level Contract is supposed to provide a safety net, but it has been written so weakly that many of the evening social services can be cut - Newbury is NOT unique - and one has to wonder if the author was more concerned to allow the successful bidder to give the government as much money as possible rather than safguarding residents of the Shires.
