FGW STRIKE ACTION !!
« on: January 10, 2008, 11:31:57 AM »

Hot off the press!!

FGW staff have voted in favour of strike action... the news has only just broken so I will add to this as things become known.

.... Heres more.... (From www.bbc.co.uk/news )

Strike planned at train operator
Hundreds of guards and drivers at rail operator First Great Western have voted to go on strike, a union has said.
The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said relations had broken down and its executive will consider whether to call strikes over the dispute.

Part of the union's concerns are about whether managers have received enough training to drive and guard trains.

First Great Western had previously said it was working with the unions to resolve issues.

A full statement is expected later.

"RMT members have today made quite clear what they think of First Great Western's confrontational style of management," said the RMT's general secretary, Bob Crow.

"The votes reflect the anger that our members feel at the company's behaviour, and if it wants to avoid industrial action it should begin to deal sensibly with the range of issues involved and stop the routine use of managers to guard and drive trains."

I doubt very much that an actual strike will take place, as I'm sure they'll be a last minute agreement of some sort.

If the unions were serious they'd have not in the past few days negotiated an extention to Rest Day Working until mid February for the Driver grades -a funny way of demonstrating that 'relations have broken down'.

The unions, especially ASLE&F, have been less professional, and less transparent with their members over the last few months than the management of FGW. That really IS saying something!
