Parry People Movers has secured a contract worth £700,000 to supply two new light rail vehicles for the GoVia run London Midland rail franchise (link below.) http://www.transportbriefing.co.uk/story.php?id=4578The order will see two PPM 60 lightweight railcars operate all services on the branch line between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town , replacing the heavy diesel trains that currently provide the service. The vehicles will be based at a new depot on the branch line , eliminating the need for empty trains to run to and from the maintenance facilities at Tyseley and reducing leasing charges payable by London Midland. Porterbrook Leasing will buy the railcars to lease to London Midland from December 2008. London Midland will re-deploy the single coach train previously used on the Stourbridge Town service elsewhere to improve capacity on other parts of its network.

I've had a look at the Parry People Mover website, and information elsewhere too.
How practical is this system beyond Stourbridge ... I see that the website has artists impressions of PPM35 PPM50, PPM80 and PPM100 .... which I take to being systems with 35, 50, 80, and 100 passenger capabiities? Maximum speed? Issues as to whether lines can be shared with conventional trains?
The press is talking 2 vehicles PURCHASED for 700k pounds ... I'm thinking .....

As I understand it , there are signalling issues with PPM vehicles sharing lines with conventional trains. This would explain why the Stourbridge and Bere Alston - Gunnislake (in the context of Bere Alston - Tavistock re -opening) lines are top of their agenda , largely because they are self - contained.

Shucks - that looks like a really future-possible approach that's in practise limited to backwaters ....

That figures - I very much doubt such a light-weight vehicle would correctly operate track circuits.
