Is Melksham really too dreadful a place to stay and eat? - 4716/8608

I wrote the following on the end of a thread concerning Asda's planning proposal for a new store by the Wessex Water Treatment plant (!) in Melksham:

Finally, is it only me who was slightly surprised to learn that the Asda reps, when they're here for meetings, prefer to stay in hotels and eat in restaurants outside the district and not in the town they want to become a part of?

That was followed as follows:

I am suprised that YOU are suprised that ANYBODY would want to attempt to stay in such an uninviting town....let alone eat in it!

Is Melksham really that bad?  Seeing our dreadful train services, our bus stops even in the centre lacking modern signs about what's coming along, and even companies who want to set up here not actually using the facilities, I have to ask "is there something wrong with us"?

I wouldnt say Melksham is uninviting, ok so one or two areas could do with brightning up and it needs a decent train service but it's no worse or better than most other places in the area.  You will always get people with negative attitudes who bemoan and criticise their locality but never actually attempt to do anything about it.  If Daryl feels that way about his town perhaps he should move!
I was soon going to suggest a pre Christmas catch up meeting for the 'committee' and other STT regulars with perhaps a Curry or Chinese or something in the town after?  Perhaps we should invite Daryl and ASDA  ;)

Funny you should be discussing this, I've been pondering today where to go for a celebratry meal.  I put restaurants and Melksham in to search engines which came up with 2, Toxique and Conigre Farm neither of which could I find a website for to let me know what to expect.  I've got to admit that apart from the Melksham Tandorri, Saltan and Lees occasionally for informal meals when I eat out I tend to go to Seend Cleeve, The Strand, Great Hinton, Devizes etc.  So if you can suggest suitable places in Melksham I'd appreciate it and it would save the environment as I could walk!

Thanks!

Toxique is long since out of business .... Conigre Farm in new hands quite recently, French Restaurant, rather the good the one time we ate there a while back.  We enjoy the Refa but it may be too informal for you, or the King's Arms.  Next year, we may be doing evening meals here .... oops - I shouldn't be advertising. But that's business meals not romantic evenings.

Thanks, may give the Conigre Farm a try.  We do sometimes use the Refa but wanted somewhere a little more special for tonight.

Don't believe them!  Once I've actually caught up on two months of doing not much while convalescing I will post the many beautiful photographs I took while in Melksham.  That'll show 'em.

Does Melksham have a co-operative website for external relations and tourism and business visiting?

I think people go too much on heresay based on opinions of people who have little idea of the reality of a place.

Hi, tried the Conigre Farm on Thursday night and can fully recommend it.  During the week they do a fixed price, 2 or 3 course menu with a good choice and were very friendly and helpful.  Thanks for the advice!

I understand the concerns expressed, but never the less would welcome a Thai restaurant.  And there are a couple of other eating options that could usefully be added too.  The demand IS there; you try getting a table at the Refa on a Friday night, go in to the Golden Falls without having pre-ordered, or phone a Pizza order in for home delivery and you'll see that the current suppliers are running close to capacity.  Then look at the expansion plans, 750 homes at Snarelton Lane. x00 more homes on the old George Ward site. And much much more more in the RSS.

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
