Tehmina argues that the significant traffic problems on north-south routes such as the A350 (Chippenham to south coast) and also A338 in the south east of the county mean there has never been a better time to consider improving the rail service (link below.)

That's an excellent description of just how awful the service is from Swindon to Chippenham - it can be done direct (once a day) in 55 minutes, but usually takes much longer, and involves a train at Bath Spa where the change is hardly "cross platform" for those with limited mobility.
