To quote from another thread in this "Help and assistance" area ....
We require an email address when you register - that's just so that we've got some sort of way to get in touch with you if the need arises and to give us some sort of audit trail. We're not asking you to reveal your email address to other members ... you get a choice of whether or not to do that in your profile. And we promise not to pass on email addresses to third parties without you're specific consent, except as laid down in the forum agreement that you accepted when you signed up (e.g. if we have a legal obligation to do so).
With issues such as the Swindon to Southampton train service, there are many forum users who log in only infrequently - so and messages passed through as "personal messages" may lie unread for weeks. But at the same time, there have been occasional times where we've felt that an upcoming meeting, or a consultation period, is something you would want to know about. On just a handful of occasions in the last year, I've sent out a general email to everyone's registered address in the expectation that it will reach those with an active interest.
If you have registered with a 'throw away' email address, I can't reach you. That could be considered to be acting rather against the spirit of the thing - rather like wanting to have the vote, but not being prepared to sit on a Jury. But I do appreciate that this is something that may not strike you as you register, and that you may have skipped quite quickly over the registration agreement ...
On another matter, Graham please forward your email to me as an instant message through this forum. I'm afraid the email address I list on here is a disposable email address which I never access (this is something I use when signing up for any forum or bulletin board, etc, to prevent spam.)
If those words ring familiar to you, please email me (
graham@wellho.net) with a true email address that you can be reached through while you're wishing to remain an active member. I'll update your registration record in the database to reflect that. I appreciate that there's a great concern about spam these days, but unless you choose to reveal you address in public within the board / your profile, that should not happen.
I'm quite happy to correspond on personal issues through 'personal messages' here, but they can't be used for private correspondence relating to the board as a whole - that's a job for email.
Graham
