Long working days ahead for Melksham train commuters
« on: July 24, 2006, 04:15:01 PM »

I'm told that in the finalised timetable, due out soon, the Melksham to Swindon service arrives at Swindon at 07.50 (half an hour earlier than the current service) and, in the evening, departs at 18.42 (an hour later the the current service).

I can't see many people choosing to use such an inconveniently timed service.

Hi .... that's unfortunate but not unexpected .... can you tell me how reliable your source is (please email via graham@wellho.net if you prefer not to answer here ...)

The 07:50 at Swindon is actually 6 minutes better the estimate I had from Andrew Griffith's May talk; the 18:42 is 10 minutes worse again ....

Probably not timed specifically to connect, although they do run half hourly at the moment and if thats the case with the new timetable then it shouldnt be to bad.

Bye bye commuters, hello ghost service playing second fiddle to the stroud valley line.  What really annoys me is the timetable we have been given (or are about to get) does not even fit the SRA specification of having the services in the peak.  It would be a slightly easier pill to swallow if the trains we have got are at least run when they are likely to get the most patronage.

Gentlemen, remember ....

1) The Looe branch was saved from closure just two WEEKS before the last train was due to run

2) There's a number or parliamentary questions that lie unanswered  Smiley ... other things too

3) It would be trivially easy to make a real POSITIVE use of the Stroud Valley service to feed a 153 in attached to the first service of the day and return it to base attached to the last service of the day.

4) It takes 50 minutes longer to travel from London to Melksham if you have to switch to the bus at Chippenham, and not everyone has a car available; even if there's a family car, the partner may need it ...

I think we also need to bear in mind that although this is the full timetable following consultation, it isn't the finalised timetable - it won't be finally validated by Network Rail until September.

I can't reveal my source on the timings, but it is impeccable!

If it is not validated by Network Rail until September does that mean further changes can be made up until then?  As I understood it from Andrew Griffiths only very minor timing tweaks could be made once it had been published on FGW's website.

Me thinks that uncoupling a 153 from the morning train and running it up and down every 2 hours, and re-attaching it to the evening service is a minor twaek  Grin

Totally agree - All they would have to do is make sure it doesnt interfere with mainline trains between its uncoupling and recoupling later on; as you have already suggested this could easily be done by building in a couple of minutes slack and holding the train in the single line Melksham section if needs be.
Geez - Now I feel like I am telling that baker how to bake his bread  Cheesy

I understand that, in the main, only further tweaks will be made.  However, I am told that there are still a couple of big issues that have not yet been resolved regarding the St Ives branch line and high-speed services through Slough.
