£13 Million For Cambrian Line Improvements
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:11:47 AM »

A £13m project to improve the rail network between mid Wales and England has been announced by the Welsh Assembly Government (link below.)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/mid_/6937532.stm

Plans for the single track Cambrian Line include improving or building new passing loops so trains can pass without being held up.

The line will also be raised at Dyfi Junction , near Machynlleth , to prevent flooding from halting services.

The work will be carried out between this autumn and December 2008.

The Welsh Assembly Government will spend £8m on the project , while Network Rail will fund the remainder of the money.

The news has come as a blow though to campaigners fighting to reopen their village station at Carno , near Newtown , as a passing loop.

Proposals are to build or develop passing areas at Dyfi Junction , Talerddig , near Machynlleth , and Welshpool.

After raising a petition , the Carno group's campaign was due to be discussed by the enterprise and learning committee next month , as part of a new system to give people direct input into Welsh assembly decision-making.

But Tony Burton , chairman of Carno Station Action Group , said the announcement "makes a mockery" of that , but the assembly government said the two matters were unrelated.

Meanwhile , plans for an hourly service on the Cambrian Line , announced by officials last year , are still being considered.

For those not familiar with it, the Cambrian line runs from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth - a town with a resident population slightly smaller than Melksham - and currently has a service every 2 hours.  A long and rambling branch follows the coast from Dovery Junction up to Pwhelli.

The people of Carno will have to wait to see whether their railway station will be reopened (link below.)

The Enterprise and Learning Committee concluded that it would be difficult to justify the case for a new station on the estimated number of passengers alone.

However , the committee did say that there may be a case linked to the wider objectives of supporting a rural community and encouraging the regeneration of an area.

The fact that Carno is positioned on a stretch of line between Caersws and Machynlleth where there is no station for a distance of more than 20 miles adds further weight to the argument for a new station.

Much would depend on the cost of providing the new station and what impact it would have on a potential hourly service.

The report concluded that it would ask officials to "provide support to the Carno Station Action Group in developing and submitting a formal business case for such a station".

I think it's fair to say that the line doesn't just exist for residents of Aberystwyth, but also to a large walkers/holidaymaker/general tourist travelling public too.

I think Graham's comment was more intended to compare the services on offer to Aberystwyth and Melksham.

Yes indeed, Lee. I was just pointing out that the population of a given place is not the only factor that determines service levels.  Smiley

Thanks for coming to my "defense" everyone .... appreciated, but not really needed.  Wink

I have not been able to find any other line which I can use as a realistic comparison to ours withou their being other factors - there will ALWAYS be other factors.   On the Welsh line, it's the predominance of walkers and tourists and university students and many othe factors.   On "Melksham" from Swindon, the other factors are little things like all the people who want to tarvel beyond.   I could compare the Irish sea beyond Aberystwyth, with Trowbridge beyond Melksham!
