Steven Smith , 36 , sprayed passengers including women and children with Champagne before smashing the bottle and threatening passengers with a broken half of it.

They ran terrified to either end of the carriage as Smith took an emergency hammer and , when he left the train , deliberately smashed a window.

Prosecutor Tony Todd said that on January 26 , Smith boarded a packed Valleys line train at Queen Street Station , Cardiff , at about 5.30pm. He was drunk and was carrying two bottles of champagne.

“As it pulled away he opened a bottle and began spraying alarmed passengers. He then smashed the bottle across a safety rail. Flying glass hit a 15-year-old girl, cutting her chin, and a 17-year-old youth had three cuts to the back of his head,” he said.

He smashed a glass case containing an emergency hammer and brandished that.

A passenger pulled the emergency handle and everybody got out at Cathays Station.

Smith left and used the hammer to smash a window, causing £400-worth of damage before making off.

Smith , of Lower Terrace , Cwmparc , Rhondda , was jailed for 21 months and ordered to be on licence for a further 12 months after he admitted charges of affray and causing actual bodily harm.
