2 out of 50 weekday trains cancelled last week, and 2 out of 50 so far this week ... 4% which is about average; not really sensible to quote the figure for this week yet as we've only on Tuesday.

Looks like they've fixed the train It STARTS southbound from Westbury, so it will reach Southampton and (as I understand it) only the service up to Swindon will then show as "cancelled" in the official stats. It's 'trains failing to arrive at their final destination' that they count, I think. This is quite a regular occurrence, often caused by a shortage of train crews ... nice to have actually "caught" the departure board telling us. Thanks for your prompt post, Lee

so they are not fined so much as the train arrived at Southampton. First divert trains as well, so the train runs and no fine

I've never fully got to the bottom of the cancellation algorithm, but I do know that the punctuality one relates to arrival within a certain number of minutes of schedule at final destination, and that many trains have a "recovery time" built in to the timetables.
In many ways, the principle of a recovery time is a good one; helps get things back on schedule in the event of disruption. I'm not so sure that it's an effective way of minimising delays if it's provided just before final arrival at final destination; that strikes me more as an attempt to manipuate. But I may be wrong, and it's country-wide and not just on First group trains. I noticed a Southampton train that was about 25 late at Melksham the other day, but with the aid of recovery time was due into Southampton just 9 late. Significantly (?), on the web site all the OTHER station times were shown in red, but the Southampton time was in the regular black. Another on time service?
I would actually advocate 3 minutes of recovery time on the TransWilts ... southbound between Chippenham and Melksham, northbound between Trowbridge and Melksham. That way, the train has a station stop in bothe directions (Melksham) where it can wait schedule, and it can be reliably crisp in hitting both main lines at exactly the right time.
