South West Regional Assembly "Gone By 2010"
« on: July 18, 2007, 11:32:30 AM »

Local Government Minister John Healey has told MPs that the South West Regional Assembly will be gone by 2010 (link below.)

Many of its powers will be transferred to the South West of England Regional Development Agency.

Mr Healey also said the Government will press on with plans to give councils the chance to raise extra cash from businesses.

The money would be used to pay for major transport and other infrastructure schemes , such as light rail and "supertram" projects.

It could be used to revive the long-held dream of a light rail scheme in Bristol , which was eventually abandoned after many years of planning.
