Network Rail Project Hits The Locals’ Buffers

Residents are fighting plans for a Ł16m railway signalling centre to be built behind their gardens (link below.)

Network Rail has unveiled details of the proposed regional centre for South Wales , off Ninian Park Road.

It claims centralising its signallers in one hi-tech 24-hour headquarters will improve safety and reliability for passengers across the region.

But the plan to locate the two-storey , partly-glass centre on the site of a disused milk depot on railway land – which does not require planning permission – has angered some residents of Ninian Park Road.

Local councillor Mohammed Islam said: “Most of the complaints I have had are from residents who are concerned about having a 90-space car park in use 24 hours a day behind their houses."

The plans were publicly revealed by Network Rail yesterday at an event organised for residents.

The derelict former milk depot is being demolished and Network Rail plans to start building work later this year and to finish by November or December 2008.

Control staff and signallers will then start a phased move into the building , beginning with Newport’s signal boxes in 2009 and ending in Port Talbot’s in 2025.

Ultimately , it will be staffed by 60 people working in shifts.
