20th June: 17:28 Cheltenham Spa to Westbury due 19:25 - 2628/5774
Written by Trowres on Wednesday, 20th June 2007

20 June 2007
This train will be terminated at Swindon. It will no longer call at: Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge and Westbury.

Replacement road transport will be provided from Swindon

Never mind, while waiting for the bus, you may hear the 18:16 Swindon-Westbury-Castle Cary rumble through! >:(

Also, the Southampton-Cheltenham via Melksham has been reported as cancelled between Southampton and Westbury.

So they'll just turn the same train around at Swindon and bustitute us?  I guess that's very convenient operationally.

I would have thought that if this was caused by Glastonbury we would have had more notice, but this seems to be short term and no explanation was offered (unusually) so I've dropped FGW a sline to ask why.  I was planning to be on the 18:42 tomorrow as I'm up in Oxford for the day, but I'm not sure if it will be running.

I was at Salisbury station yesterday, just after 18.30.  I noticed that the train to Cheltenham Spa (orig. Southamopton) via Melksham and Swindon had already been reported as cancelled.

The reason on the screen: "shortage of coaches"

I have photographic evidence.  I will post later.

I suspect you have been Glastonburied.

Here is the photo I took at Salisbury reporting the Cheltenham Spa service cancelled due to lack of coaches.

Not sure what the driver sickness is about, it seems strange all round.  The 1827 clearly did not start in Southampton at all.

Looks like tonight's 18:27 Southampton Central - Cheltenham Spa has been cancelled due to "Earlier vandalism".

EDIT: It appears that the train will now start from Westbury, so Melksham will still get a service tonight.

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
