Apparently, the arch bridge at Shurnhold was originally planned to be a level crossing! I find that idea inconceivable because the bridge is on a bend and the level of the road and railway makes that idea impossible. Does anyone have any more info on this?

Hi Mark, and welcome.
I have a track diagram of Melskham station (from a set of Wiltshire diagrams drawn up in 1975) that shows a level crossing in the plan marked c 1870; perhaps it was actually built with a level crossing and the bridge put in later (or perhaps there were both?). In those days, Melksham was a big station and the road traffic would all have been horse and cart, so I guess they had the staff to do the gates, and the curve really didn't matter.
The level crossing is gone on the plan that's marked 1925 ...
