Congratulations to Douglas Alexander on his appointment as Transport Secretary. He takes over from Alastair Darling.
Douglas Alexander represents the Scottish seat of Paisley South. The railway line passes through his constituency on its way from Glasgow to Largs, Ayr and Stranraer, with stations at Johnstone, Milliken Park and Howwood.
Ticket sales at Howwood - the latest data I have available - show just under 24,000 journeys per year as compared to over 27,000 ticket sales for Melksham. The data is for different years, so you might not consider the comparison a fair one. Ah - but one train calls at Howwood every hour in each direction, compared to Melksham's five per day, and I don't think that's very fair either. Do you?

"Douglas Alexander , who entered the House Of Commons in 1997 , and his sister Wendy , who was elected to the first new Scottish parliament , were the children of a Church Of Scotland minister and a doctor. "We used to discuss politics over Sunday lunch , after church , " he told me. They belong to the new breed of professionals in politics , technicians comfortably at home in the new Labour party." First major speech as Transport Secretary (It would be fair to say that he is a Road Pricing fan.) http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_about/documents/page/dft_about_611647.hcsp
