Proposals to build a railway station in Corby in Northamptonshire have been boosted by Network Rail's decision to commit £1.2m to the scheme (link below.) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/northamptonshire/6523271.stmThe decision means that if the government approves the scheme later this year the new station could open by December 2008.

Isn't Corby a station that closed ... then re-opened but closed again (I think that's also happened at Sinfin and perhaps a couple of others too, and is feared for Melksham).
Good for Corby.
What colour is the local MP? Does he / she have a big majority??

The member for Corby is Labour's Phil Hope , and I am afraid that he hasnt got a very big majority at all. In 2005 , he beat the Conservative candidate , Andrew Griffith (no , not that one ) by a paltry 1517 votes. See link below. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/159.stmOn an unrelated note , it is rumoured that a certain rail campaigner spent two of his very early years in Corby , around the time that the steelworks shut down , forcing his family to move back down south. Difficult times , by all accounts. Anyway , I digress. At least it is another victory for Transport 2000's "Growing The Railways" campaign. A new Corby station is one of their main aims (link below.) http://www.transport2000.org.uk/news/maintainNewsArticles.asp?NewsArticleID=324"Return rail services to Corby - a large town in Northants which no longer has a station. Rail services need to be returned." They have been doing rather well lately (link below.) http://www.transport2000.org.uk/news/maintainNewsArticles.asp?NewsArticleID=374“Transport 2000 is delighted with this news, particularly as it is exactly what we have been calling for since 2005 in our Growing the Railways campaign. However, this isn’t new Government money – it’s thanks to Network Rail being more efficient. We now urgently want to see the Government doing more to expand our railways.” Further details on "Growing The Railways" can be found in the link below. http://www.savethetrain.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=504.msg1474#msg1474

According to Wikipedia, the population of Bromsgrove is 27,000 (compared to just under 24,000 at Melksham). The BBC site states that 10 million pounds is put aside by Network Rail for a new station there. That same amount of money would fund a two-hourly service from West Wilts to Swindon fo 30 years if the traffic level was flat, but we all know it would grow based on recent estabklished evidence. So this give me great hope. If the case for a rebuild at Bromsgrove can be made, the case for Melksham is OBVIOUSLY PROVEN.

The new station will have parking for 140 cars , a taxi rank and bus interchange.
Thanks for that link, Lee. I looked at the artist's impression on the BBC site you sent us to, and notices that the station will have someting else that Melksham lacks too - a train at time that people are around. It's interesting to note that we're comparing Corby to Melksham. In all seriousness, another big difference is that Melksham is a through station where onley a quarter of th traffic is local, but Corby will be a terminus. On that basis, perhaps Melksham ought to have dramatically better services than Corby?

A £1.8m contract for the infrastructure at Corby's new station has been given to Mainland Contractors of Kettering (link below.) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/northamptonshire/7258989.stmStarting in mid-March, the company will begin building the access road, transport interchange and car park. Network Rail will build the station, due for completion in December when trains between Corby and London start to run.
