Melksham is Growing!
« on: March 05, 2006, 08:00:21 PM »

At the South West Regional Transport Users Forum on Saturday (there's a mouthful for you!) I was chatting with Colin Rees of the local First bus company.   He was telling me that the X71 and X72 (Bath to Melksham and Devizes) bus route is the fastest growing in his patch and that First have put proposals to Wiltshire County Council for the service to be stepped up to every half hour. ((I understand that these plans have not gone ahead at this stage though)).

Colin was also telling me that they're planning to run the 234 serive to and from Chippenham station, which I have to say is s step for the good in integrating the transport network - it's always seemed crazy to me that arrivals at Chippenham by train have to trapse down to the town bridge and wait at the stop there (if they know where it is) or over to the bus station.

There was a lot going on on Saturday - I did hear Colin say that the plans come into effect in May, but I'm not sure which order the various stops will be made in Chippneham and whether it will be just a few 234s or all of them running to and from the Station.

Doesn't it seem - err - odd with all the growth in the TransWilts train in recent years and in the X71 and X72 routes that the services on the train are being cut?

Yes and with houses being built near the railway line on Beanacre Road (Spencers Gate) they could see how handy the station is, shame not being moved there as there were plans to move it.
