Darlington Rail Museum Modernisation Begins
« on: February 21, 2007, 10:54:35 AM »

Work is under way to transform an historic County Durham rail museum in a bid to attract more visitors (link below.)

The £1.7m revamp of Darlington's Railway Centre and Museum will improve access to archives and artefacts.

On one hand, I cheer and say "yes, those artefacts should be looked after and should be used to encourage the next generation to be aware of the railway and its heritage". And on the other hand I say "that's the same price as has been asked for a decent TransWilts service through most of the current franchise".

Let hope BOTH can happen.

The first train is being moved as part of the scheme (link below.)

Blue Peter , an A2 Pacific engine , is being transported from Darlington's Railway Centre and Museum to Barrow Hill depot , near Chesterfield.

Other engines will be moved into storage or to other positions at the museum during the next two weeks.

Visitors are to be given the chance to see how the £1.7m redevelopment is progressing (link below.)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6967222.stm

So far improvements have been carried out to the roof and some of the famous locomotives have been moved out of the building.

During next month's tours , visitors will also be able to see the Q7 locomotive , on loan from the National Railway Museum , which will form part of the new displays.

The museum's star attractions , Locomotion and Derwent , have been moved from the platform of the former Stockton and Darlington Railway Station onto the tracks.
