I commute from an unmanned station that has one of those automated-information points where you press a button and an electronic lady tells you when the next train is due etc.
The station was recently maintained by Network Rail and in the process, they removed the front panel on the info-point and never put it back. It's now 'lost'. Unfortunately the franchise TOC didn't notice this when they signed off the work so we are now without an info-point.
The TOC says that they do not know where to get spares (obsolete technology) and a replacement system will not be installed for another 2 years.
1: Does anyone know where I can find a spare info-point front plate (the bit with 2 buttons and a speaker) ? 2: Alternatively, where can I find a specification for the front plate assembly so that I can go to Maplins and get the bits and try and make one ?
Cabling etc is all in place and is apparently 'in service'. All we need is the front plate. Thanks.

Which station do you use. Is it a FGW one?

More ineptness by the TOC and Network Rail. Those information points are extremely useful, if not essential. If you're on an unmanned station such as Oldfield Park waiting for a train, and don't have a phone/have no battery on it, etc, you have no other way of knowing if the train is going to arrive. And it's always good to know if the train is on time when you arrive at the station, too. I remember when I contacted Wessex trains when the info point at Oldfield Park wasn't working a few years ago, they were very grateful for me telling them and by the next day it was working. How times have changed... I assume, sennencoveuk, you mean the silver ones with the 2 buttons for each platform? There are also the blue telephone-based box ones.

1: The station is PATCHWAY which is a FGW station in North-West BRISTOL, next to Rolls-Royce. 2: The info-point is a silver-ish box with 2 flat, touch-sensitive 'buttons' on the front and a speaker. The info-point was never 100% reliable, but it was better than nothing. With a time separation of 1 hour between trains, it's always worth knowing what's going on and whether to hang on in there on the platform, or take shelter in the car for a while.
Thanks for your interest.

Arriva Trains Wales uses these info points as well, I've seen exactly the same ones at Severn Tunnel Junction and Lydney. Seeing as they operate those stations, they may have some spare. It may also help that Patchway is fairly close to Wales!
I'd do it soon, as any rain and such probably won't do the electrics any good.

Graz, Thanks for that suggestion. I've checked out SevernTunnel and they do have the '3 button' variety info-point which could probably be adapted. All we need now is one of those special screwdrivers and a dark night ! Any ideas ?

I'd probably take a slightly less drastic approach! I'd e-mail Arriva Trains Wales and see if they can supply one. Or contact your MP, and see if he can arrange to get one fitted from Arriva. It'd be a shame to see nothing done about it, so well done for trying to get this sorted.
