I think this calls for a new GBM timetable  :D

Does this mean that they might start running trains that stop at Weston Milton station again? I use this station every day to travel to and from Bristol and since December it has been awful. In the evenings this service has dropped from 3 trains an hour to 1 and this one is frequently overcrowded to a dangerous level, not to mention the number of times it is late, cancelled etc. Its so frustrating!!

Jon, unless there's heavy pressure brought to bear, I doubt that more trains will be stopping; the general interest is in running trains nonstop between major centres at a high ppm (pence per mile) and not have the local trains at a low ppm get in the way.  However, I'm not a Weston expert ... anyone have any different thoughts?

Weston Milton is to Weston-super-Mare what Oldfield Park is to Bath, a suburban station serving in this case the Milton area of Weston-s-Mare (and a much wider area). These stations are often so much easier to get to than the main station that they're a lot more convenient for passengers such as you, Jon. It's such a shame that it's these stations that get overlooked such a lot, when clearly they are a vital part of the network and are very well-used. 1 train per hour is clearly far too low at peak time and yet another example of how services have dropped to disgraceful levels under FGW and the shadow of the DFT.

EDIT: Good news all the same about the line, though. Weston-super-Mare will definitely benefit, but this may also be good news for Weston Milton.

On the other hand I'm concerned this could in fact be a threat to Weston Milton.

There appears to be little space to add a second running line and a further platform here. I can already picture the Network Rail/FGW view - "you're losing a station in the suburbs, but WSM gets a much more reliable service".

The thought had crossed my mind , and that of others , Mike.

A close eye will be kept on this , and related issues.

The line through Weston Milton station was singled in 1972 and the down platform was moved to Lymstone Commando Station on the Exmouth branch. Here is a link with photos.

Save the Train was the campaign to bring an approriate train service back to and through Melksham.

Most big contributors are still around writing at the Coffee shop forum where new members are very welcome.

The train has been saved - sort of - we have stepped back up from an unusable service to a poorish one but it's doing very well. We did that through setting up the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership. That fulfilled its early objectives; it has been taken over by local and regional government types who are now doing medium and long term work. The team from this forun can also be found at the Melksham Rail User Group (which was the Melksham Rail Development Group at the time these articles were written and we had no users.

We mustn't loose sight, though, that the train service remains poor and needs our community support in marketing and campaigning to keep it going in a positive direction ... and all the more so when we're expecting to find a different normallity once we get out of the Coronavirus Pandemic and head for zero carbon via the climate crisis. Yes, it's saved ... it's now a key community facility ... the need for enhancement and the strong and near-universal local support remain, and the rail industry and goverment remain slow to move and provide the enhancements even to level us up with other towns. Please support the Melksham Rail User Group - now very much in partnership rather than protest with the rail industry and local government, including GWR, TransWilts and unitary and town councils. And please use the trains and buses, and cycle and walk when you can.
