Would you like 6 trains a day each way, or just 2, next year? Draft timetables which will be implemented with sufficient public and political support have been prepared bt First Great Western, validated by Network Rail, and run through the County Council for whom this is a strategic route in their current local transport plan - see box above.

Why does the "SRA" decide?
Who is it accountable to?

The Strategic Rail Authority has asked three bidders to tender for the "Greater Western" Franchise to be operated from 2006, and have hidden within their public document (pages 32/33) a request that the bidders tender for a reduced service to Melksham. No reason is given at this point in the document for the reduction, but page 4 talks about reductions to a few services where traffic levels no longer justify the service at the current level.

The SRA ceases to exist at the end of 2005

The Strategic Rail Authority is being would up by the end of 2005. And yet it's making a decision for what happens from 2006 onwards for which it will not be able to be held accountable in any way. Any service reduction proposals should be deferred to the incoming responsible body so that accountability can be maintained.
