Tourism

Wiltshire is a beautiful country, and the train brings a substantial number of tourists here. Many of them are from overseas and have purchased special deal tickets such as Britrail passes. Since these are "Rover" rather than per-journey tickets, they won't be counted into any statistics ... and since they're purchased for rail travel as part of a holiday package, the tourist business would be lost to the area if the visitors had to use the bus.

In Wiltshire, we're in the West Country Tourism area, and they've sponsored the painting of a train in their colours. Here it is, pictured in Swindon in August 2005.

How much tourism? There's about a dozen little hotels and B&B's in Melksham and the immediate area and they're often very busy / full. We live next door but one to a B&B and they're very used to picking up and dropping off public transport customers ... including running them to and from Chippenham when the train isn't running.
