Wiltshire Council Raise Car Parking Charges To Protect Bus Routes

Car parking charges

Please follow these links for car parking charges in Wiltshire from July 5, 2010.

Dick Tonge, cabinet member for highways, said:  “Additional revenue is being raised from parking to address a shortfall in the funding of bus services in accordance with the decision of Cabinet in February 2010, prior to the outcome of our consultants review of parking strategy for Wiltshire that is currently underway.

“We recognise any increase in car parking charges, however small, will not be welcomed by the public especially in the current economic climate. However, the additional revenue is being used to help maintain local bus routes, which in a rural county like Wiltshire is very important for many people and businesses. Without this subsidy these town routes would not be viable and those residents who use the buses to visit their local town or city for their shopping would be in difficulty.

“Consultation on the parking strategy will be undertaken between July and September giving members of the public the opportunity to influence the decisions of the council regarding parking policy. Full details will be released closer to the time and will available on the Wiltshire Council website.”

One of the major car parking issues is for staff coming in / going out of work, who already feel that they're paying far too high a proportion of their salary on parking.   I wonder if there's any way that the local ("metro") bus(es) could be made more appropriate for them?  Perhaps by making a tiny payment to each of Fist and Faresaver to fall in line with a timetable plan at the town centre as follows:

.25 after - service 234 calls on way from Chippeham to Trowbridge, (from station / McDonald's)
.27 after - service 106 calls on way from Snowberry and Dauncey Garderns to Asda
.28 after - service 14 calls on way from the Metro to Sainsbury's
.32 after - service 234 calls on way from Trowbridge to Chippenham, (to station / McDonald's)
.36 after - service X72 (Faresaver) calls on way from Bowerhill to Bath (to station / Bath Road)
.37 after - service 106 calls on way from Asda to Dauncey Gardens and Snowberry
.38 after - service 272 calls on way from Bath to Devizes (from station / Bath Road)
.40 after - service 14 calls on way from Sainsbury's to Metro

.55 after - service X34 (Faresaver) calls on way from Chippeham to Trowbridge, (from station / McDonald's)
.57 after - service 106 calls on way from Snowberry and Dauncey Gardens to Asda
.58 after - service 14 calls on way from the Metro to Sainsbury's
.02 after - service X34 (Faresaver) calls on way from Trowbridge to Chippenham, (to station / McDonald's)
.06 after - service 272 calls on way from Devizes via Bowerhill to Bath (to station / Bath Road)
.07 after - service 106 calls on way from Asda to Dauncey Gardens and Snowberry
.08 after - service X72 (Faresaver) calls on way from Bath to Bowerhill (from station / Bath Road)
.10 after - service 14 calls on way from Sainsbury's to Metro

I have labelled the bus to be funded by Asda as "service 106", and I have moved the X72 and X34 by half an hour in both directions.  We'll put a hole in the fence in Spencer's Gate to make the 234 bus railway accessible, a stop at the top of the station approach for the 272 ... and there you have most of the headlines.

Message to Dick Tonge - by all means be "Dick the Stick", but also provide this integration carrot to help us make better use of the bus services you're subsidising.

OK ... what does that give?

Half hourly buses in from:

1. Semington, the corner at Berryfield, and Semington Road
2. Melksham Oak, Bowerhill (Magister), Bowerhill (Halifax) and Spa Road
3. Melksham Forest and Queensway
4. Beanacre, Riverside Est. corner, and the station
5. Sandridge Road, Dauncey Gardens, Manor Park, Bloor Homes, Snowberry Lane
6. Shaw, Shurnhold and the Station

Then out to all of those, and to Sainsbury's and Asda too.

We have services 237, 72 and 73 which I am loathe to make suggestions for without further study ... and services such as X86 and X96, 235, 38 and 39 which I regard as specific flow specials - probably best to leave those if their flows are well established (comment welcome!)
