Tourists Spent £71m In Wiltshire
« on: February 23, 2008, 07:52:06 AM »

Tourism related businesses in Wiltshire are performing "maginificently" according to the chief executive of VisitBritain (link below.)
http://www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/news/latestheadlines/display.var.2066435.0.tourists_spent_71m_in_wiltshire.php

Tom Wright praised the county's tourism industry, which is among the best in the country, following the release of Government figures which show overseas tourists spent £71m in the county in 2006, up £7m from the year before.

Unfortunately, someone has posted a rather derogatory comment about Melksham Tourist Information Centre and its staff.

I have added a further comment ...

The local TIC runs independently in Melksham and is not funded by the District Council any longer.  There IS a valid discussion to be had as regards to its funding, but I understand that it has some 30,000 people a year through its doors (figure unconfirmed) and I know it provides a very useful service for visitors to the town of whom there are a surprising number!
