I have NOT done my sums on SWTrains, but the FGW franchise payment is equivalent to a 2 pound tax on each and every passenger journey that starts from or ends at London Paddington.  And 1 pound in every 14 that FGW take goes to the shareholders, I understand.   Not sure of the Stagecoach setup, but probably of a very similar ilk.
